Oleksandr Usyk biography has it that he was born on January 17, 1987, in Simferopol, Crimea, Ukraine. Usyk, who is the firstborn in his family, has two siblings. His father worked in the military in Afghanistan while his mother worked in construction.
Usyk played football until the age of 15. He trained at the SC Tavriya Simferopol specialized school of Olympic reserve. Young Usyk switched to boxing in 2002.
