2022 BMW Berlin Marathon: Full results

The 2022 BMW Berlin Marathon that was slated for Sunday 25 September went down on the streets of Germany’s capital Berlin with up to 45,000 athletes competing in different marathon disciplines.

This year’s Marathon marked the 48th edition of the Berlin Marathon attracting the registration of more than 45,000 athletes from 150 nations across the world participating without the covid-19 restriction, unlike the 47th edition.

The annually held marathon saw both men and women compete in what was termed by many athletes at the event as conducive weather in Berlin, the German capital which was ideal for racing with about 52 degrees (11 degrees Celsius) after experiencing slight showers a night before the official day and more precipitation.

Men’s Elite Race

Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge crowned this year’s BMW BERLIN-MARATHON edition with an incredible world record of 2:01:09 hours to beat his previous record by half a minute ahead of his compatriot Mark Kirui who clocked 2:05:58.

Kipchoge was making his 6th appearance on this international stage. He last competed at the Berlin Marathon event in 2018 at the 48th edition where he set by then a new record time of 2:01:39.

Ethiopia’s Tadu Abate finished in the third position clocking a new personal best of 2:06:28.

At the 47th edition held last year, he finished in the fourth position with a time record of 2:08:24.

Women’s Elite Race

Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa won the Women’s Elite races clocking 2:15:37 after making her entry at the Marathon with a personal best of 2:34:01.

Prior to road running, she specialized in 800 meters races.

Her recent Road Running appearance was early this year at the Riyadh Marathon in Saudi Arabia.

Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjiru who was making her second debut at the Berlin Marathon finished in the second position clocking 2:18:03 ahead of Ethiopia’s Tigist Abayechew who finished in the third position with a time record of 2:18:03.

Switzerland’s Paralympian Marcel Hug graced the wheelchair competition clocking 1:24:56 ahead of the USA’s Daniel Romanchuk with 1:28:54.

Britain’s David Weir finished in the third position clocking 1:29:02.

Wheelchair Women

Catherine Debrunner won the wheelchair women race clocking 1:26:47 just 3 seconds ahead of her compatriot Manuaela Schar who finished in the second position clocking 1:36:50.

Debrunner was making her debut in Berlin Marathon competition.

“It was an incredibly great day for me, competing on the road is something completely different than on the track. You have to be much more attentive,” said Debrunner after the race.

Debrunner made her comeback to sports recently after taking a break to focus on her education.
Susannah Scaroni of the United States of America finished third with 1:36:51.

The result of the draw will be released at the beginning of December this year.
