The English Premier League is the most followed football league in the world. The English league currently has some of the best players in the world, such as Mohamed Salah, Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland.

Top Premier League teams sign quality players from all other leagues worldwide. Some players leave the English Premier League during the summer and winter transfer windows. Top players like Nemanja Matic, Sadio Mane, Juan Mata and Raphinha have left the league this summer.

Premier League teams have sold some quality players for high prices over the years. Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich remain alluring destinations for Premier League stars.

This article will look at Premier League’s top five most expensive sales.

1. Philippe Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho was one of the best players in the world during his time with Liverpool. The Brazilian attacking midfielder was a target for top European teams such as FC Bayern, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

Coutinho joined FC Barcelona in the summer of 2018 for a record 121 million euros. The Brazilian is topping the list of the most expensive Premier League sales.

However, things didn’t work out well for Coutinho with the Spanish giants. His transfer still remains to be a colossal squander of money as he failed to shine at Camp Nou.

Barcelona loaned Coutinho to Bayern Munich during the 2019-20 season. He spent half last season on loan at Aston Villa, making 19 appearances and scoring five goals. He joined Aston Villa on a permanent transfer this summer.

2. Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard is another star who has struggled to impress after leaving the English Premier League. Hazard’s transfer to Real Madrid is Premier League’s second most expensive sale.

The former Chelsea winger joined Real Madrid in 2019 for 103 million euros.

Eden Hazard has failed to prove his worth at Real Madrid in the last three seasons. The Belgian international has been like a shadow at Real Madrid. He has been suffering injuries that have reduced his game time.

Some pundits see Hazard’s transfer fee as a total waste of money. Nevertheless, Hazard has won the UEFA Champions League and two La Liga titles with Real Madrid since he arrived in 2019.

3. Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale lacked game time during his last seasons at Real Madrid. However, the Wales international was a star at Real Madrid when he joined the club.

Gareth Bale is one of the most expensive Premier League sales of all time. The former Tottenham Hotspurs winger joined Real Madrid in 2009 for 90 million euros. Bale proved he was worth every penny paid to Tottenham Hotspurs for his transfer.

Bale left Real Madrid this summer after spending 13 years at the club.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo
