Chris Smalling started his football journey at Walderslade Boys. He then joined Lordswood and later Millwall before playing for the academy of Maidstone United. He made his senior debut at Maidstone in 2007 and secured a transfer to Middlesbrough the following year due to his solid performance at the back.
