Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini will not play at the French Open following an abdominal injury.

He picked up the injury after advancing to the third round of the Monte-Carlo Masters against Francisco Cerundolo.

Berrettini also missed the Madrid Open due to the injury but he is hopeful he will return in Stuttgart at the Boss Open.

Berrettini recently resumed modest training following the advice of his medical staff, but the French Open is too soon for him to play competitively.

Although his rehabilitation is progressing well, the 27-year-old claimed that he wouldn’t be prepared to play in the clay-court major.

“Making good progress with my rehab and can’t wait to be back competing. I will not be ready in time for Paris so my return to tour will be on grass at the @bossopen in Stuttgart,” he posted on his Instagram story.

Berrettini won’t be playing in the French Open for the second year in a row. He last played at the French Open in 2021 where he played against Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

He has won seven of the 13 games he has played so far in the 2023 season with his most famous performance being the one that saw Italy advance to the United Cup final.

He defeated players like Hubert Hurkacz and Casper Ruud in addition to Stefanos Tsitsipas, who he battled hard against but fell to 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.

Before his injury struck, Berrettini reached Acapulco’s Mexican Open quarterfinals but he withdrew over abdominal pains.

As he looks to advance in the rankings, Berrettini, who is presently ranked 20th in the ATP, will be motivated to do well during the grass-court season. With nine victories, the Italian did well on the surface in 2022.

Before defeating Andy Murray in the Boss Open finals in 2022, he defeated Radu Albot, Lorenzo Sonego, and Oscar Otte to win the tournament.

The Italian then participated in the Queen’s Club Championships and won by defeating Dan Evans, Denis Kudla, Tommy Paul, Botic van de Zandschulp, and Filip Krajinovic while successfully defending his title.

His abdominal injury drew attention to his girlfriend Melissa Satta who some online bullies felt she was to blame for his injury.

Satta is the ex-wife of footballer Kevin Prince Boateng. She hit back at critics propagating the idea that Berrettini’s recent abdominal pain was a result of too many bedroom activities.
