- Several teams have spent huge amounts signing players this summer transfer window.
- However, there are certain transfers done this summer which make little sense, such as releasing a player without having a perfect replacement.
- Spending huge amounts on a player who does not fit the team’s playing style makes little sense.
The 2022 summer transfer window is open until the start of next month. We could still see big transfers happen in the coming days before the window finally closes.
Top clubs like Manchester United and Juventus are busy in the market as they want to strengthen their squads for this season.
Several teams have spent big signing top players who would play a big role for their teams in the 2022-23 season. However, some transfers do not make sense to certain teams.
Letting a player leave without a replacement makes no sense at all. Spending big money signing a player who does not fit the team’s playing style also makes little sense.
This article will look at five summer signings that do not make sense.
5. Conor Coady – Wolves to Everton
Conor Coady joined Everton on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton this summer. Coady has been one of the solid defenders at Wolves’ defence.
The England international is known for his leadership qualities and aerial abilities. His aggression and ability to read the game are also worth talking about. Frank Lampard has added one of the best defenders to his Everton squad.

It is quite confusing why Wolves would decide to let go of an experienced head like Coady leave on a season-long loan. They have only brought in 21-year-old Nathan Collins from Burnley. He is not as good as Coady and might struggle before fitting in Bruno Lage’s squad.
Wolves allowing Conor Coady to leave on loan does not make sense. Furthermore, the Molineux outfit have sent the England international on loan for free.
4. Riqui Puig (FC Barcelona to LA Galaxy)
FC Barcelona released Riqui Puig to LA Galaxy on a free transfer. The decision by Barca to release Riqui Puig is surprising because the youngster looked set to become one of the future stars in football.
Puig made his FC Barcelona debut in 2018 and showed signs of becoming a regular starter for the Catalans. Xavi believed in the youngster and gave him 573 minutes across all competitions last season. Puig demonstrated good off-the-ball movement, dribbling and passing.
Releasing Puig to La Galaxy was a waste of young talent because he had the potential to become a top midfielder in Europe. The Catalans could have kept the young midfielder or loaned him to a European club so he could continue developing.
3. Hugo Ekitike (Reims to PSG)
Hugo Ekitike scored ten goals and provided four assists for Reims last season in 24 appearances. Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain were eager to sign him this summer. Hugo chose PSG over Newcastle United and will spend the 2022-23 season on loan with the Parisians.

The decision by Hugo to join PSG was not a good one. The young centre-forward will struggle to get playing time with the Ligue 1 champions because they already have an attacking trio of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar. Furthermore, Mauro Icardi, Julian Draxler and Pablo Sarabia are on the bench.
The youngster could have joined Newcastle United, where he could have found regular playing time. The Premier League club could have accommodated Hugo well because they are building on the future.
2. Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City to OGC Nice)
The decision by Leicester City to let go of Kasper Schmeichel after the expiration of his contract was a surprise to football fans. Kasper was one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.
The Danish international joined Ligue 1 side OGC Nice on a free transfer. Signing Schmeichel was a big coup for Nice, who will benefit from his goalkeeping skills next season.
Leicester released Schmeichel without finding his perfect replacement. The Foxes have already conceded eight goals in three games and are without a win in the Premier League.
1. Marc Cucurella (Brighton to Chelsea)
Brighton benefited by selling Marc Cucurella to Chelsea for 62 million euros. The Spanish international is the most expensive full-back of all time.

Marc will play a big role for Chelsea this season by adding value to the squad. However, the former Brighton man was an unnecessary signing for Chelsea.
Chelsea already have Ben Chilwell, who joined the club for 45 million euros in 2020. Signing Marc as Chilwell’s back-up for 62 million euros, yet they are of the same age, makes little sense.
Chelsea could have landed a good player, but the amount they have paid on his is hugely above the odds.
