Homeboyz move five points clear as Leopards lull to Bullets draw

Kakamega Homeboyz players celebrate one of their three goals
  • Homeboyz have lost only once this season
  • Leopards coach Aussems was suspended for their match against Vihiga
  • Kimani picks point in first match in charge of Bandari

Kakamega Homeboyz’s hunt for a first ever FKF Premier League title got stronger after thrashing Bidco United 3-1 to retain their five-point gap on top of the standings.

Homeboyz are now on 40 points, with second placed Nairobi City Stars on 35 at second spot. Defending champions Tusker FC who started on a bad footing have now risen to third with 33 points, seven behind the leaders.

Against Bidco, Homeboyz were on the rampage from the start and they broke the deadlock after 16 minutes through Yema Mwamba. They continued with their dominance and David Okoth made it 2-0 in the 31st minute.

The home side went to the break 3-0 up when the Bidco backline turned the ball into their own net in the 39th minute as they looked to cut out Michael Isabwa’s cross.

In the second half, Bidco came back with more resilience, but the closest they would come was a goal from the penalty spot scored by Jacob Onyango in the 72nd minute.

Bidco have struggled this season and they have not won in five successive matches.

AFC Leopards striker Ojo Olaniyi wins the ball against a Vihiga opponent

Elsewhere, AFC Leopards were held to a frustrating draw by Vihiga Bullets in their FKF Premier League match in Nairobi. Ingwe missed the presence of their head coach Patrick Aussems who was serving a one match ban after being red carded in their last match.

His absence on the touchline proved to be a bad spell for Leopards as they lacked the push and urge and played with very low intensity.

Leopards struggled to break the Vihiga backline but they had two similar opportunities early on. Washington Munene struck well weighted crosses from the right but in both instances, Maxwell Otieno failed to connect into the net.

They had another opportunity in the 36th minute when Brian Wanyama picked up the ball from range, but his rasping shot sailed straight to the keeper’s waiting arms.

Vihiga also didn’t create much on the other end and the closest opportunity they had at goal was via a Nickson Kalwale shot from the right but it was an easy pick for keeper Levis Opiyo.

In the second half, the visitors had a glorious opportunity 10 minutes in when Vincent Ogola picked the ball behind the defense, but his attempt at a shot sailed wide, with space and time ahead of him.

Nicholas Musamba also had a rasping shot deflected to the side netting after slaloming past Leopards leg inside the box before releasing a low bullet.

The result sees Leopard remain 11th in the standings with 25 points, while a third consecutive draw for Bullets sees them move to nine points though they are still perched bottom of the log.

In other matches played on Sunday, William Wadri scored in the 71st minute to scrape a draw for Bandari FC as they played to a 1-1 draw with Gor Mahia in Mombasa. This was new coach Anthony Kimani’s first game in charge after Andre Cassa Mbungo was fired last week.

In Thika, Posta Rangers beat newly promoted FC Talanta 1-0 to put off a two-match losing streak and move to seventh in the standings.
