Tanzania sack coach Amunike after Africa Cup’s poor performance

Tanzania part ways with coach Emmanuel Amunike - Sports Leo

Tanzania’s coach Emmanuel Amunike has paid the price for poor performance at the African Cup of Nations and was sacked by the country’s Football Federation.

The Taifa Stars, as Tanzania are known, were playing in their first Afcon in 39 years but lost all three of their group games in Egypt and finished bottom, making an early exit from the tournament.

Amunike was a former Nigeria international winger in his day and had been the coach of Tanzania coach since August 2018.

The high-point in his career with Nigeria came in 1994 when he grabbed two goals at the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, giving his team a 2-1 victory over Zambia 2-1 to secure a second African title.

The 46-year-old also played for some famous clubs in his career, including Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, and Zamalek.

Amunike seemed to be philosophical about his firing, saying he was happy with his players and proud of them, even in defeat.

He can also take solace that three other coaches were fired at Afcon – those from Morocco, Egypt, and Uganda.
