DR Congo on fire against Zimbabwe, run out 4-0 winners

DR Congo woke up for their last Afcon Group A match and Zimbabwe paid the price for the Leopards’ attacking fury, conceding a heavy 4-0 loss at 30 June Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, on Sunday night.

The DRC has improved its goal difference but does not know yet if it will be enough to reach the knockout stages of the Total Africa Cup of Nations 2019 for a best third-place finish.

The Democratic Republic of Congo could not start the game better by opening the score in the 4th minute. After a free-kick by Jacques Maghoma, Jonathan Bolingi connects with a header to open the scoring.

The first half was played at a fast pace and the two teams created several opportunities.

In the 34th minute, after scoring opportunities for Khama Billiat and Ovidy Karuru for Zimbabwe went begging, Issama Mpeko staged a telling counter-attack. His cross into the penalty area was met by Leopards striker Cedric Bakambu who scored to give his side a 2-0 lead.

In the 63rd minute, Bakambu scored from the spot to complete his brace in the match (3-0).

In the 78th minute, Britt Assombalonga rounded off the scoring with his side’s fourth goal (4-0).
