India will host a MotoGP race for the first time in the tournament’s history next year in an attempt to expand the sport outside its known heartlands.

According to reports, the 2023 MotoGP race will take place at the Buddh International Circuit. Buddh, located in Uttar Pradesh to the south of New Delhi, previously held Formula 1 races from 2011 up to 2013.

According to BBC, India has more than 200 million motorcycles on the roads. The motorcycles form 75% of the number of vehicles in India.

The announcement of MotoGP coming to India next year comes a few weeks after reports emerged that there are plans to race in Saudi Arabia.

According to India’s sports minister Anurag Thakur, India hosting the MotoGP race in 2023 is a historic day for the country’s sporting industry.

He also said that India hosting the MotoGP race is a tribute to the 75th year of India’s celebration.

We very much look forward to racing at Buddh International Circuit and can’t wait to welcome the fans.”

MotoGP has races in four Asian countries; Malaysia, Thailand, Japan and Indonesia. Dorna signed a deal with Saudi Arabia to host one of the rounds of the world championships.

The MotoGP race in India will feature two races. The races will be held between September 22 and 24.
