Cameroon handed Caf flag as Afcon 2021 journey starts out

Cameroon to host 2021 AFCON - Sports Leo

Cameroon received the Caf flag from the host nation, signaling the end of the 32nd edition of Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) and the start of the journey to the 33rd Afcon edition, Cameroon 2021 in a symbolic ceremony at the Cairo International Stadium, Egypt, on Friday night.

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) said Cameroon have agreed to host the 2021 Afcon after being stripped of the 2019 finals.

That was due to poor preparations and security issues.

Ivory Coast had initially been named as the 2021 hosts and have already lodged an appeal against this decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

Hany Abu Rida, head of Egypt’s Local Organising Committee (LOC), handed the flag to Seidou Mbombo Njoya, the president of Cameroon Football Association in the presence of Caf president Ahmad Ahmad.

This will be the second time Cameroon will host Afcon after staging it in 1972.

The draw for 2021 Afcon qualifications was conducted in Cairo last Thursday.
