Even before he won the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc height was and still is an interesting subject. Still, why would the height of a Formula 1 driver matter? Isn’t just insignificant? Some would argue.

Unknown to some, including some F1 diehards, every inch matters. Generally speaking, taller drivers weigh more than shorter ones and every gram matters in this sport. Taller drivers could have less space for additional weight (ballast). Height also determines the best possible weight distribution because there is a minimum weight limit for the car and driver together.

An F1 driver’s weight has a significant impact on the car’s centre of gravity, which impacts performance and handling. A lower centre of gravity is the most ideal for racing cars.

IS CHARLES LECLERC 180 CM?

Leclerc is 180 cm tall. A lot of successful F1 drivers stand at 180 centimetres or thereabouts. For example, Alpine driver Esteban Ocon has raised the team’s profile in the past seasons despite being 186 cm tall.  At such a height, F1 drivers enjoy a better view over the driving wheel. Nevertheless, driving prowess and the capacity to adjust to the vehicle frequently is more important than height which is just the tip of the iceberg.

Taller drivers typically weigh more, which makes it more difficult to balance the weight for the car’s centre of gravity, which affects handling. F1 cockpits are also cramped. Leclerc is 1.8 m tall and weighs 69 kgs. The Monegasque traces his love for racing to his formative years where he spent his free time go-karting in Monte Carlo. He won the Junior Monaco Kart Cup and the French PACA Championship which inspired his rise. Soon enough, Nicolas Todt who was a manager of his racing friend Jules Bianchi spotted him in 2014 and held his hand.

It is through him that he earned a seat at Ferrari Academy after succeeding in Formula 2. He made his F1 debut in 2018 with the Ferrari-affiliated Sauber squad. Fast forward to 2024 Charles Leclerc height continues to stir interest after winning the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. With the race victory, the Ferrari driver overcame a 93-year-old winless spell in Monaco.

The Monaco Grand Prix has not been won by another Monegasque Formula One driver since 1931 but Leclerc rewrote this history.  He triumphed from pole position, ultimately ending the dreaded “Monaco curse.” Though it wasn’t easy, he is thankful that he won because it was a redemption race for him. His victory stirred questions about his height among other factors that handed him his first Grand Prix win in 2024.

WHO IS THE TALLEST MAN F1?

Alpine driver Esteban Ocon and Williams driver Alex Albon are the tallest F1 drivers at 186 cm (1.86 m) or 6 foot 1 tall. However, the maximum length limit in Formula One is not strictly enforced. Other laws, however, impose an indirect cap on the size of cars. Regulations specify the minimum and maximum widths and heights, for instance, and many car components have size requirements.
