- Inter Milan clinched the Scudetto after beating arch-rivals and nearest challengers for the title AC Milan at San Siro
- Simon Inzaghi’s side have become just the second team to win 20 Serie A titles after Juventus and will have a second star stitched onto their jersey
On Monday, April 22, Inter Milan clinched the Scudetto after beating arch-rivals and nearest challengers for the title AC Milan 2-1 at San Siro.
Francesco Acerbi opened the scoring for Inter in the 18th minute after heading home Benjamin Pavard’s flicker. Marcus Thuram then doubled the lead in the 49th minute after latching onto a long ball and then smashing it into the roof of the net. Fikayo Tomori pulled one back for Milan but that ended up being a consolation as the Nerazzurri held on to a historic Derby della Madonnina win.
Inter players and coaches celebrated wildly on the pitch after the final whistle even though Milan were the hosts in this fixture. Simon Inzaghi’s side have become just the second team to win 20 Serie A titles after Juventus and will have a second star stitched onto their jersey.

For the 48-year-old, this was his first league title as a manager and sixth at Inter Milan. Speaking after the title-clinching match on Monday, Inzaghi acknowledge everybody that was part of his team’s success.
“There are so many protagonists of this success, first and foremost the players, but also the directors and chairman Steven Zhang, as anything we needed during this journey was provided for us. It’s an incredible sensation, we did something incredible and it’s only right to share it with as many people as possible.” Simon Inzaghi is quoted by Reuters.
Inter Milan have been the only consistent team in the Serie A this season. With last season’s champions Napoli struggling to find form, the Nerazzurri took a firm lead in the race for the Serie A title. Juventus threatened to catch up with them but lost momentum in February and are currently third on the standings.
AC Milan have been behind Inzaghi’s side but still too far to catch up with them. With six games left to play and Inter 14 points clear at the top of the table, a victory in Derby della Madonnina would allow them to be crowned champions early. They have so far lost just one league match.
Inter Milan have become the second team in Europe’s top five leagues to win a league title after Bayer Leverkusen who won the Bundesliga one week ago. With Inzaghi, captain Lautaro Martinez and midfielder Nicolo Barella all set to renew their contracts this summer, the future looks bright for Inter Milan and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they retain the title next season.
How Inter Milan Beat AC Milan
Having beaten AC Milan 5-1 in their first meeting of the season back in September, Inter Milan had the confidence needed to win Monday’s fixture and be crowned champions.
The Nerazzurri were the stronger side in the early stages of this crucial tie and had their efforts rewarded in the 18th minute when Francesco Acerbi headed home Federico Dimarco’s corner after being flicked by Benjamin Pavard.
Inter continued to dominate the match but had to wait until the second period before doubling their lead. Thuram gave Inzaghi’s side the goal they needed for security in the 49th minute when he managed to beat Tomori before firing the ball into the back of the net.

With ten minutes left to play, Tomori pulled one goal back for AC Milan giving his teammates hope that they could delay Inter’s title celebrations. However, they couldn’t find the leveller and tempers boiled in stoppage time, which led to the referee sending off Theo Hernandez, Denzel Dumfries and Davide Calabria.
