On Sunday, April 15, Bayer Leverkusen clinched their first Bundesliga title after a massive 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen.

Victor Boniface’s penalty in the first half set Xabi Alonso‘s team on course to an unforgettable victory before Granit Xhaka and Florian Wirtz scored quick goals in the second period to get the job done.

Leverkusen supporters stormed the pitch in the 82nd minute when Wirtz scored the club’s fourth goal of the evening and again when he scored in stoppage time. The 20-year-old midfielder scored a hat-trick in the match and there were wild scenes of jubilation at the BayArena after the referee blew his whistle for full time.

Leverkusen have gone undefeated in 29 league matches and broken Bayern Munich’s eleven-year dominance in the German league by winning the Bundesliga title. This is Leverkusen’s first trophy since 1993 and they have won it with 16 points above Bayern Munich who are second on the standings.

Alonso’s side remain on course to clinching a remarkable treble as they are in the finals of the German Cup and the quarter-finals of the Europa League where they recorded a 2-0 lead from the first leg.

Speaking after leading Leverkusen to their first league title, Xabi Alonso said he couldn’t describe the feeling of winning the league.

“It’s indescribable… Personally, it hasn’t yet sunk in what we’ve done. I’m going to have to go back to the dressing room to get my head around it.” Xabi Alonso is quoted by SuperSport.

Leverkusen were struggling to get out of the relegation zone when Alonso took charge of the club in October 2022 but are now Bundesliga champions barely 18 months later. They won with five games to spare.

How Bayer Leverkusen Thrashed Werder Bremen

After Bayern Munich recorded a 2-0 victory over relegation threatened Cologne on Saturday, Bayer Leverkusen knew they needed to beat SV Werder Bremen to be crowned Bundesliga champions on Sunday at the BayArena.

Leverkusen started the match on a high note and would have taken the lead early on had it not been for Michael Zetterer who reacted brilliantly to thwart Piero Hincapie’s effort. Their push for goal was eventually rewarded in the 25th minute when Victor Boniface converted from the spot after Julian Malatini fouled Jonas Hofmann in the box.

The BayArena erupted after the opener and things were lively for the remainder of the first half as the hosts continued to create more chances. However, their were moments when Leverkusen fans had to hold their nerves as Bremen were also attacking dangerously.

In the 60th minute, former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka unleashed a thunderous shot from 25 yards that beat Bremen’s goalkeeper and increase the hosts advantage to 2-0. From there, it was one-way traffic as Xavi Alonso’s men completely dominated the visitors.

Florian Wirtz scored his first goal of the match in the 68th minute, which was also a rocket that hit the roof of the net. Wirtz was on the scoreboard again 15 minutes later after running away and then beating the goalie with ease. There was brief invasion as fans entered the pitch to celebrate with the fans.
