While he is no longer playing, the former Liverpool man is still active in the football world as he is the manager of Atletico Madrid Juvenil A. In this article we take a look at memorable moments from Fernando Torres career which spans from Atletico Madrid to Japanese club Sagan Tosu.

1. Debut And First Atletico Madrid Goal

After impressing at the academy, Fernando Torres made his senior debut on 27 May 2001, in a match against Spanish club Leganes at Estadio Vicente Calderon. His first senior goal followed just a week later as Atletico clashed with Albacete at the Estadio Carlos Belmonte.

It was a well taken header that went straight to the back of the net and opened the Spain international’s account for goals. He would soon establish himself as one of the regular starters in Atletico’s squad and one of the club’s greatest players of all time.

2. Goalscoring machine at Liverpool

After showing his goalscoring prowess at Atletico Madrid, numerous top clubs showed interest in Torres. He joined Liverpool in the summer of 2007 for the club’s record transfer fee at that time. Torres would bring his brilliance in front of goal to England where he terrorized opposition defenders and goalkeepers. During his time with the Reds, he was a fan-favourite and scored a whopping 81 goals in 142 matches.

Well, you can’t talk about memorable moments from Fernando Torres career and not mention his performance at the Euro 2008. The Spain international brought his Liverpool form to the Euros and played a massive role as his country won the title.

Torres assisted Spain’s first goal at the tournament, which was scored by his strike partner David Villa, and then provided a moment of brilliance in the final against Germany. The legendary striker made an exceptional sprint to beat Philipp Lahm and then score one of the best goals of his career by chipping Jens Lehmann.

4. Rounding De Gea And Then Missing

A good number of football fans will agree that Fernando Torres made a mistake by leaving Liverpool for Chelsea. While he did win the titles he was dreaming of, including the UEFA Champions League, he was never at his best in front of goal.

In one particular match against Manchester United, the Spanish forward missed an open goal after rounding goalkeeper David de Gea. Chelsea were trailing 3-1 at Old Trafford that afternoon, with Torres scoring the lone goal. He had the opportunity to double his tally when he rounded the goalkeeper but did the unimaginable by horribly firing the ball into the Stretford End.

Torres was mocked for weeks because of the miss and he struggled to score after the match. He did score in October but would wait for 24 games before finding another goal, which came in the FA Cup against Leicester City.

The Blues were one-man down and trailing 2-1 when they did the unimaginable by scoring against one of Barca’s strongest teams led by tactician Pep Guardiola.

The Spanish giants had camped in Chelsea’s penalty box when they were caught off-guard by substitute Torres who latched onto a clearance and then made an astonishing run all the way to Barca’s box and then rounded goalkeeper Victor Valdes before finding the back of the net. The goal sent Chelsea to the Champions League final in Munich.
