Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has broken his silence about a move by Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton to exit the team for Ferrari in 2025.

Alonso discounts Hamilton’s claim that he always had a dream as a child to race for the Italian team which he started pursuing him in 2023.

The 38-year-old British driver announced a fortnight ago that he was joining Ferrari for the 2025 season. It was a long held dream which came true after many years.

What Does Fernando Alonso Think About Lewis Hamilton Moving to Ferrari?

Alonso says Hamilton is not honest in his admission that he made up his mind to race for Ferrari in fulfilling a childhood dream.

The Spanish driver while speaking at the launch of a new Aston Martin model which he will use for the upcoming season termed Hamilton’s assertions as hypocritical.

“It was not his childhood dream 12 months ago, no? Or two months ago, I guess. It was a different dream,” he said.

Alonso who raced for Ferrari between 2010 and 2014 said the Italia F1 team has one of the fastest cars on the grid and they only need good talent like Hamilton’s to win.

“I hope he enjoys the experience. I think it’s a very special team. But it’s more special when you win… it’s few years already [since] they have a very fast car and they were fighting for big things. Maybe Lewis can bring that extra to fight for the championship because the car is there,” he added.

Who Will Replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes?

Despite being a two-time world champion, Alonso hasn’t won a race since the 2013 campaign since he hasn’t had a car that is capable of winning many races since then.

A vacancy at Mercedes has been created by Hamilton’s move to Ferrari. Prior to Red Bull’s current supremacy with Max Verstappen, Mercedes had won seven straight drivers’ championships, with Hamilton winning six of them and Nico Rosberg winning one.

With his contract at Aston Martin ending at the end of the 2024 season, Alonso has seemingly put his name in the hat for the Mercedes drive.

“I am aware of my situation which is very unique. There are only three world champions on the grid and I am the only one available for 2025, so I am in a good position,” he explained.

For now though, the 43-year-old is focusing on winning with Aston Martin adding that he is not ready to retire even after leaving his current team.

Why Will Lewis Hamilton Leave Mercedes

In a lengthy Instagram post, Hamilton said that his childhood dream was to race for Ferrari but his stint with Mercedes complicated his ambition.

Mercedes gave him powerful and fast cars for nine years and it was amazing racing for the team. In fact, he won his seven F1 titles with the Silver Arrows until the 2022 and 2023 seasons where the car failed to live up to his expectations.

He says that shifting camp to the Italian team is finally fulfilling his childhood dream of racing for Ferrari. However, this wasn’t an easy decision for him to make because he remains entirely indebted to Mercedes for having him in the last decade.

His decision to move to Ferrari is solely bounded in his belief that he will make history with Ferrari once more just like he did with Mercedes from 2014 to 2020.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t an easy decision for him to make having spent 11 years of his career with the Silver Arrows.

He thanked Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff for his unwavering support over the years.
