Dricus du Plessis made his professional MMA debut in 2013 competing at EFC Africa. He won his first four fights before losing to then-EFC Middleweight Champion Garreth McLellan. He then decided to compete as a welterweight, defeating Dino Bagattin in his first fight.

After recording three wins in the welterweight division, du Plessis had a shot at the vacant EFC Welterweight Championship. He defeated Martin Van Staden to win the title.

In 2017, du Plessis faced Yannick Bahati in a fight for the EFC Middleweight Championship. Following his victory in the first round, he became a two-division champion. The South African would then compete at KSW before returning to EFC for another spell.
