Assan Ceesay is a Gambian professional footballer who plays as a forward for the Saudi Pro League club Damac and the Gambia national team. He is part of the Gambia national team squad participating in the 2024 AFCON and has played in all their matches so far, looking forward to contributing to their success in the tournament.

His football journey began in the dusty streets of Banjul, to the bright lights of international football. Like most Gambian children, the sport provided an escape and a platform to showcase his natural talent. Here, his skills caught the attention of local scouts and he earned a place at Gambian second-division club Wallidan FC.

His performance at Wallidan took him across the globe when he was called up to join Swiss club Lugano where he played for two years before joining Chiano, another Swiss club where he became a prolific striker in the league in his first season.

To further test his mettle, he embarked on a loan spell with German club VfL Osnabruck though he faced challenges of the 2. Bundesliga. He then returned to FC Zurich where he flourished in an attacking system. In his second season with the club, Ceesay’s performance was excellent and he finished as the Swiss Super League’s second scorer and ranked third in assists.

The player recently signed with Saudi Pro League club Damac FC for a three-year contract. Internationally, he has represented the Gambia national team and since his debut, he has become a key player for the team. The forward represented Gambia at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and is part of the squad currently participating at the 2024 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Early and Personal Life of Assan Ceesay

Ceesay was born in Banjul, the capital of Gambia on March 17 1994 to parents of the country’s descent. His younger brother Ebrima is also a professional footballer who currently plays for the Gambian club Hawks Banjul.

His passion for football manifested at a young age and spent most of his time playing along the streets before he was enrolled at second-division club Wallidan FC in Gambia. While training at the club, he received formal training and gained valuable experience playing against other young Gambian hopefuls.

He is a devout Muslim and often celebrates his goals by performing a sujood, a prostration of gratitude to Allah. He founded the Assan Ceesay Foundation whose aim is to support and empower underprivileged children through education, sports and healthcare initiatives.
