Shelton Benjamin began wrestling during his sophomore year at high school. He went on to record a 122-10 overall win-loss record before leaving high school. For two consecutive years (1993, 1994), he was the South Carolina state high school heavyweight wrestling champion.
Benjamin continued to wrestle at college and achieved All-American status twice. Due to his achievements as an amateur, it was easy for him to join a top wrestling promotion in the United States. On 10 January 2000, he was offered a contract by WWF, later known as WWE.
