The breakup of renowned tennis star Caroline Wozniacki and her ex-fiancee Rory McIlroy, a golfer left many unanswered questions.

Everything seemed great for the sporting couple until 2014, just days before their wedding when Mcllory announced their breakup.

Nearly seven years later, the memories of this breakup haven’t left his mind and it still hurts some of his fans.

When McIlroy and Wozniacki announced their engagement in 2013, it was such big news because they promised their fans a big wedding.

A year later, Mcllory bolted and called off the wedding via a phone call. He recounts that the reality of marrying against his wish sunk with the numerous wedding invitations they had sent out as a couple.

“The wedding invitations made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails,” he explained. “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.”

Wozniacki did not expect a breakup via a phone call and a press statement but a physical meeting. She never saw it coming and she would never be ready for it anyway

“It was very hard because he made it very public from the start. He put out a press release so I didn’t have a choice. I was shocked. I thought at least, you know, I would get a face-to-face or something. But there was nothing – it was just a phone call and I did not hear from him again,” she told Yahoo News at a past interview.

“I don’t think you expect to find yourself in a situation like that, you can’t prepare yourself or your body for anything like that so I think I was in a bit of a shocked phase there for a while.”

Wozniacki took to her social media channels to playfully respond to McIlroy following their breakup, teasing him with slow and indirect jabs.

She posted a photo on her Instagram page rocking high heels in Istanbul, Turkey and wrote that it took her three years to wear such and felt great.

Three years after the breakup, she was engaged to basketball player David Lee and accompanied her news with a pretty diamond ring on her finger.

Wozniacki described this as the best thing life gave her because she found a soulmate in him.

Lee, a former forward for the San Antonio Spurs, has also played for the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Dallas Mavericks.

In 2017, the same year Wozniacki was engaged to Lee, McIlroy married Erica Stoll, in a grand ceremony held in the western part of Ireland.

This opulent event, hosted in the 13th-century Ashford Castle, was heralded as the wedding of the year, set in an exclusive estate in the village of Cong in Co Mayo.

Ashford Castle, encompassing 350 acres, offers amenities such as a nine-hole golf course, horseback riding, falconry, fishing, and clay pigeon shooting, and can be rented for approximately 100,000 euros (£83,700) per day.
