Sterling Marlin made his NASCAR Cup Series debut racing for Roger Hamby at the Nashville Speedway in 1976. He would then participate in small races up to early 1980s while building his resume and expertise.

In 1983, Marlin got his first regular Cup Series job, driving Hoss Ellington Racing’s No. 1 Chevrolet car. Three years later, he recorded his first top ten finish. Sterling Marlin decided to change teams in 2001, joining Chip Ganassi Racing where he drove the No. 40 Dodge. During his time with Chip Ganassi Racing, he recorded four victories. He didn’t finish the 2002 season because of an accident at Kansas Speedway that broke his neck.

Marlin returned to racing two years later and joined MB2 Motorsports. He also competed for Ginn Racing (later known as Dale Earnhardt, Inc.). He would then stop competing as a pro at the end of the 2009 season and begin making sporadic appearances in demonstration races.
