Toth added to the commotion by laughing at Shuai as she grew more and more irate. The match briefly resumed before the disagreement continued, with Toth removing the mark created on the clay to Zhang’s displeasure.

Shuai angrily asked Toth why she was rubbing the ball mark on the court to which the Hungarian confidently told her that it was because she [Shuai] was being problematic.

Although Zhang won the next set, she was so upset that she had to call her physiotherapist and eventually announced her exit from the game.

She was in a well of tears and it is likely she suffered a panic attack over the incident that she decided to retire.

However, when questioned about the match on Radio Kossuth, Toth was unrepentant about her behaviour. She boldly said that she did nothing wrong contrary to popular opinion.

“I don’t understand why she made such a fuss out of it that she wanted to overrule the judge’s decision. I don’t understand why she didn’t accept it, but she made trouble for herself,” Mail Sports quotes her.

Before leaving the court at the Romai Teniszakademia after quitting the match, Shuai swiftly shook hands with Toth and the umpire. Toth, on the other hand, got into a celebratory mood by throwing her hands up to the cheers of her supporters.

When asked about the incident on Hungarian television station MTI, the tournament’s communications manager Erik Siklos digressed from the issue.

Instead, he focused on the way the crowd treated Toth, noting that when the player removed the mark, she was disrespectfully jeered by Chinese spectators on the stand.
