  • Her actions at the Budapest Open left Chinese tennis player Zhang Shuai in tears
  • She is not apologetic even after the incident

Hungarian tennis star Amarissa Kiara Toth is the eye of a storm following outrageous behaviour towards fellow tennis player Zhang Shuai at the Budapest Open.

The Chinese player left the court in tears after the 20-year-old Hungarian player disputed a line call at the clay-court.

Toth rubbed off a ball mark over this dispute and it left 34-year-old Shuai in tears. A crosscourt forehand by Shuai appeared to land on the line, but the umpire ruled the shot out.

For several minutes, the Chinese tennis player disputed with the umpire and requested the tournament supervisor to step in while being insulted and jeered by the crowd.

Toth added to the commotion by laughing at Shuai as she grew more and more irate. The match briefly resumed before the disagreement continued, with Toth removing the mark created on the clay to Zhang’s displeasure.

Shuai angrily asked Toth why she was rubbing the ball mark on the court to which the Hungarian confidently told her that it was because she [Shuai] was being problematic.

Although Zhang won the next set, she was so upset that she had to call her physiotherapist and eventually announced her exit from the game.

She was in a well of tears and it is likely she suffered a panic attack over the incident that she decided to retire.

However, when questioned about the match on Radio Kossuth, Toth was unrepentant about her behaviour. She boldly said that she did nothing wrong contrary to popular opinion.

“I don’t understand why she made such a fuss out of it that she wanted to overrule the judge’s decision. I don’t understand why she didn’t accept it, but she made trouble for herself,” Mail Sports quotes her.

Before leaving the court at the Romai Teniszakademia after quitting the match, Shuai swiftly shook hands with Toth and the umpire. Toth, on the other hand, got into a celebratory mood by throwing her hands up to the cheers of her supporters.

When asked about the incident on Hungarian television station MTI, the tournament’s communications manager Erik Siklos digressed from the issue.

Instead, he focused on the way the crowd treated Toth, noting that when the player removed the mark, she was disrespectfully jeered by Chinese spectators on the stand.

A section of tennis players stood by the seasoned player as social media users shared videos of the very contentious match and demanded that Toth be punished immediately.

World No. 9 Maria Sakkari said that Toth should be banned from the WTA Tour. Daria Kasatkina called out the umpire citing terrible refereeing which is a bad show for tennis.

“’Absolutely disgusting behaviour. Shuai is a better person than a lot of us for shaking the ref and that girl’s hand. But then again, it’s Shuai we are talking about, of course she did,” Ajla Tomljanovic stated.

Ons Jabeur said such an occurrence is unacceptable. Overwhelmed by the love after a disastrous match at Budapest Open, said everything was wrong.

“All efforts on practice was wrong, because when you wanted to hit closer to the line, even touched the line still OUT,” she tweeted.
