Clottey was born in Accra Ghana on October 6 1977 to parents of Ghana origin and raised there. His father’s name is Ali Attuquaye Clottey, a religious Islamic believer.
He was born into a family of three children, his siblings Emmanuel Clottey and Judas. Clottey lost his father on a short illness when he was on official duty in the USA and had to travel back home for funeral arrangements due to their Islamic Canons.
As a child in his native land, he was passionate about football, a sport his late father played. He moved to the United Kingdom and later to the United States.

In his next fight, Clottey rebounded from the controversial loss by winning the African Boxing Union welterweight title.
He then rolled off a 10-fight winning streak highlighted by his first win on American soil and capture of several minor welterweight and middleweight titles.
He earned his first world title but so unfortunately as he broke his hand in a fight against World Boxing Organization Champion Antonio Margarito.
That bout has since brought controversy against Margarito that he boxed on hand wraps illegally loaded with plaster since several opponents suffered injuries during his fight.
In New York City, Clottey faced Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden for the WBO welterweight title where the player emerged a winner with a controversial split decision.
In Arlington, Texas, he fought seven-division World Champion Manny Pacquiao at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium following a disagreement on terms of a proposed boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
He lost to Pacquiao and later returned to defeat Calvin Green. Since then, Clottey announced that he would retire from his boxing career, to take care of an ailing relative.
In 2013, Star Boxing announced Clottey’s comeback signing a contract with him. He returned to the ring a month later facing Dashon Johnson.
He defeated Johnson through a unanimous decision and the following year, he beat former middleweight champion Anthony Mundine dropping him five times.
In preparation to fight Canelo Alvarez, the plan went down after Canelo sustained an ankle injury. Despite having success and leading in an early fight, Clottey was outworked over ten rounds in a fight with Gabriel Rosado, losing through a unanimous decision.
His recent win was against his Tanzanian opponent Azziz Mponda where he won by TKO in round 8.
