  • The summer transfer window is almost opened and clubs are strategizing their moves early enough
  • Manchester United is contemplating signing at least two new strikers to sort out their scoring issues
  • Manchester United has considered Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane as well as Victo Osimhen

Manchester United are contemplating the addition of two new centre-forwards during the upcoming summer transfer window to address their persistent goal-scoring issues. Currently, they are just one point away from confirming their qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season. Their return to the competition can be guaranteed by avoiding defeat in their upcoming home match against Chelsea on Thursday, which is their second-to-last Premier League game of the season. Following that, they will face Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday before their FA Cup final showdown with Manchester City on June 3.

Erik ten Hag, the manager, has frequently criticized his team’s inability to finish games off when they are in the lead. This is evident in their recent 1-0 victory over Bournemouth. Consequently, Ten Hag is eager for Manchester United to address this issue during the summer transfer window. According to reports from 90min, their primary target for the transfer window is Harry Kane, the star player from Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite Kane’s impressive tally of 28 league goals this season, Tottenham has had a dismal campaign and is likely to finish between seventh and ninth in the table, possibly missing out on European competitions. With just one year remaining on his contract with Spurs, Manchester United sees this as an opportune time to finally secure the signing of one of their most sought-after players in the past decade.

However, there is a lack of confidence within Manchester United about their ability to strike a deal with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. Levy has a reputation for being a tough negotiator, as evident from previous transfers involving Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov. Tottenham is demanding a minimum of £100m for Kane, and if negotiations with Spurs prove difficult, Manchester United is prepared to explore other transfer targets. Tottenham runs the risk of losing Kane for free if they cannot convince him to extend his contract, giving Kane more leverage in the situation.

Ten Hag hopes that Manchester United can secure their transfer targets as early as possible in the summer, ideally before their pre-season tour of the US and certainly before the Premier League resumes in August. The club’s ownership situation adds further complexity to the matter. However, Manchester United has already identified their targets and will soon begin making progress in their pursuit.

Signing Kane would likely require a transfer fee that surpasses Manchester United’s current transfer record. While they are also interested in Victor Osimhen from Napoli, his price is a significant obstacle. There are concerns within the club that a deal for Osimhen could reach £130m, which is nearly £40m more than their current transfer record. Such a significant expenditure would limit their ability to strengthen other areas of the team.

Both Kane and Osimhen are among the top targets to fill the central striking position. Other players under consideration include Lautaro Martinez from Inter and Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus. United showed an early interest in Vlahovic in January, and he may be the most attainable option among the four, despite Juventus publicly stating that he is not for sale.
