Liverpool vs Manchester United is one of the most famous rivalries in the football world. This high-profile inter-city rivalry is sometimes referred to as the Northwest Derby.

Besides being one of the biggest fixtures in English football, it is also one of the fiercest rivalries in world football. The two teams meet again this weekend in one of the biggest Premier League clashes this month.

Liverpool and Manchester United are the most successful English clubs in domestic, European and worldwide competitions. Some of their achievements include; a combined 39 league titles, nine European Cups/ UEFA Champions League and 37 FA Community Shields.

Before the upcoming Liverpool vs Manchester United fixture, we take a look at some of their great matches in the Premier League era.

1. Liverpool 3-3 Manchester United (January 4, 1994) 

Besides being one of the great Liverpool vs Manchester United matches, it is also one of the most memorable comebacks in the Premier League era.

On January 4, 1994, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United travelled to Anfield to face Graeme Souness’ Liverpool. Manchester United were 3-0 up after just 24 minutes, thanks to goals from Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs and Denis Irwin.

However, Liverpool were not going to lie down and let them walk away with the three points at full time. Nigel Clough scored a brace to reduce the deficit before the end of the first half. And after a hard-fought second half, the Reds finally found the equalizer in the 79th minute, courtesy of Neil Ruddock. The points were shared at Anfield.

2. Manchester United 1-0 Liverpool (May 11, 1996)

Well, this is one of the games Manchester United fans will remember for a very long time. The two clubs met on English football’s biggest stage, Wembley, on May 11, 1996.

With 86 minutes played, it seemed like the game was headed for extra time. However, things didn’t go that way after Eric Cantona found a space in the box. The legendary France forward fired the ball past Liverpool’s goalkeeper to seal the win for the Red Devils.

3. Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool (March 14, 2009)

The Liverpool vs Manchester United fixture played on March 14, 2009, is one that the Red Devils fans would love to forget. Cristiano Ronaldo gave the home fans a reason to celebrate with a goal in the 23rd minute, but it all ended in a 4-1 thumping.

Fernando Torres pulled the equalizer for Rafael Benitez’s side five minutes after Cristiano’s goal. Steven Gerard scored a penalty a few minutes later to give the Reds a 2-1 lead at the break. Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena scored in the second half as Nemanja Vidic received a red card.

4. Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool (September 19, 2010)

This is one of the Liverpool vs Manchester United fixtures where we have seen amazing individual performances. Dimitar Berbatov was the Red Devils’ hero on September 19, 2010, at Old Trafford, as he hit a match-winning hat-trick in the the thriller.

The Bulgarian opened the scoring for Manchester United in the 42nd minute after powering home a Ryan Giggs free-kick. He made it 2-0 just before the half time with an amazing acrobatic bicycle kick.

However, Liverpool found their way back into the game within six minutes, thanks to Steven Gerard’s brace. Berbatov had the final say on the 84th minute as he jumped above Liverpool’s goalkeeper Pepe Reina to seal the win for Manchester United.

5. Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool (October 24, 2021) 

Manchester United have been struggling to defeat Liverpool in recent years. And on October 24, 2021, the football world witnessed one of the most humiliating defeats in the Liverpool vs Manchester United rivalry. The Red Devils suffered their first 5-0 home defeat since February 1955.

Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick on that evening, becoming the first player score three goals against Manchester United at Old Trafford since Ronaldo Nazario in 2003.

Naby Keita and Diogo Jota also got on the scoresheet as Jurgen Klopp’s side thrashed the Red Devils. The match’s referee showed Paul Pogba a red card after 60 minutes for a reckless tackle on Keita.
