The Premier League referred to Manchester City as an independent commission and accused the club of not cooperating during the investigations. The Cityzens were not given advance warning of the Premier League statement and were called at the same time the statement was published.

What Have Manchester City Been Charged With?

As mentioned above, Manchester City are alleged to have breached Premier League rules requiring the provision of accurate information about the club’s financial position. The alleged breaches span a period from the 2009-10 season to the 2017-18 season.

The second set of breaches is the breaking of rules requiring a Premier League club to include full details of manager remuneration in relevant contracts with its manager. This relates to a period between 2009 and 2013 when Roberto Mancini was Manchester City’s manager

The second section also includes requirements for a club to include full details of player remuneration within the relevant contracts. This goes for the seasons 2010-11 to 2015-16 inclusive.

The third set of alleged breaches of Premier League rules is requiring teams to comply with UEFA financial fair play regulations. This took place between the 2013-14 to 2017-18 seasons.

The fourth section relates to the Premier League’s sustainability and profitability rules between 2015-16 to 2017-18 seasons.

Lastly, Manchester City are charged with breaching Premier League rules requiring teams to assist and cooperate in investigations. Manchester City have not co-operated with the Premier League in its investigations from 2018 to date.

How Has Manchester City Reacted?

Manchester City have reacted to the reports by saying that they are surprised by the issuing of the alleged breaches of the Premier League rules.

“Manchester City is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with. The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.” Part of Manchester City’s statement reads

When the Premier League began conducting its investigations, Manchester City said that the allegations were entirely false. The club also said that the allegations in Der Spiegel came from illegal hacking and out of context publication of their emails.

According to BBC Sports, Manchester City will be armed with the best lawyers in this case.
