  • Tiger Woods has announced that he will not be taking part in this year’s Hero World Challenge, which starts next month.
  • European Ryder Cup hopeful Sepp Straka will replace the former world number one at the event.

Tiger Woods has announced his withdrawal from next month’s Hero World Challenge due to a bout of plantar fasciitis.

The 46 years old will not be making his return to golf at the start of December in the Bahamas as earlier planned.

According to Tiger Woods, the injury at the base of his right foot is making it difficult for him to walk, so he has decided to withdraw from the tournament. Woods’ made the decision to withdraw from the event after consulting with doctors.

However, he will be focusing on his hosting duties at the event, which goes from December 1 to December 4 in the Bahamas.

Tiger Woods is planning to compete in the PNC and The Match Championships before the end of this year.

“In preparation and practice for this week’s Hero World Challenge, I’ve developed a plantar fasciitis in my right foot which is making it difficult to walk. After consulting with doctors, I have decided to withdraw this week and concentrate on my hosting duties. My plan is still to compete in The Match and the PNC Championships.” Tiger Woods shared the update via his Twitter page on Monday.

Tiger Woods is not the first player to withdraw from this year’s Hero World Challenge. Former champion Hideki Matsuyama also withdrew from the event a few days ago due to an injury.

The Japan international won the limited-field event in 2016. He has suffered several injuries this year, forcing him to withdraw from events.

Tiger Woods, who is a five-time winner in the Bahamas, has not featured in Hero World Challenge since 2019. With the 2020 contest cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Woods missed last year’s event because he was still recovering from leg injuries he sustained in a car crash.

And following his latest announcements, the wait to see Tiger Woods at Hero World Challenge will continue until next year’s event in December.

European Ryder Cup hopeful Sepp Straka will replace the former world number one at the event. Sepp Straka won his maiden PGA Tour in February this year at the Honda Classic.

Tiger Woods has only made three starts since the start of this year, two at the Masters and one at the PGA Championship. He finished 47th at The Masters.

Tiger Woods had earlier said that he will team up with Rory Mcllroy against Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in The Match.

The Match is scheduled to take place on December 10 and will be followed by the PNC Championship on December 17 and 18.

Tiger Woods’s son, Charlie, will join him at the PNC Championship. Father and son finished as runner-up in last year’s edition of the hole scramble event.
