Rey Mysterio, the nephew of Rey Mysterio Sr, takes the credit for popularizing cruiserweight wrestling. He is one of the most recognizable Lucha libre wrestlers. 

Throughout his WWE career, Rey Mysterio has been wearing his trademark mask. And many people have confused him with Sin Cara, who also wears a mask while in the ring. 

Rey Mysterio’s other ring names are Colibri, El Nino, Rey Mystrio II, Rey Mysterio Jr., and Super Nino.

Early Career

Rey Mysterio made his wrestling debut in Mexico on April 20, 1989, when he was 14 years old. He spent years learning the Lucha libre before joining Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion (AAA) in 1992. 

Rey Mysterio joined Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in 1995 and spent one year with the promotion before joining World Championship Wrestling (WCW). 

The American wrestler won his first WCW Cruiserweight Championship a few months after joining the promotion. He won the title again in 1977 after defeating Guerrero. 

In his last year at WCW, Rey Mysterio joined several stables and won the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship. 

WWE Career

Rey Mysterio WWE Career began in 2002 when he was signed to work on SmackDown. His first WWE title was the Tag Team Championship he won alongside Edge after defeating Benoit and Angle. 

After WrestleMania XIX, Rey Mysterio defeated Matt Hardy to win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. The Lucha libre wrestler won the 2006 Royal Rumble match. 

He would later win the World Heavyweight Championship after defeating Kurt Angle at WrestleMania XXII. 

Rey Mysterio would then spend years at WWE feuding with top stars such as Chavo Guerrero, Chris Jericho, Batista, Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk.

Between 2012 and 2015, Rey Mysterio WWE career involved working with rising stars such as The Miz, Dolph Zigler and Bad News Barrett. He also teamed up with Sin Cara and the Big Show. 

Rey Mysterio returned to the independent circuit after WWE released him in 2015. He worked for several promotions, such as Lucha Under Ground, AAA and NJPW, before returning to WWE in 2018. 

Rey Mysterio made two surprise appearances at Royal Rumble and Greatest Royal Rumble before defeating Samoa Joe to win the United States Championship. 

The WWE superstar began teaming up with his son in 2021, and together they won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship.

Rey Mysterio’s Family 

Rey Mysterio is part of an extended family of wrestlers, including Rey Mysterio Sr. and his cousins Metalika and El Hijo de Rey Misterio. 

Rey Mysterio’s wife is Angie Gutierrez. The Lucha libre wrestler has a tattoo on his body dedicated to Angie. 

The couple has two children – Dominic Mysterio (born April 5, 1997) and Aalyah (born August 20, 2001. He has tattooed the name of his children on his left and right biceps.
