Bedoya played as a defender and a defensive midfielder during his footballing days. He began his professional career with Deportivo Pereira in 1996.

The legendary footballer spent two years with Deportivo Pereira, then joined Deportivo Cali in 1998. Gerardo Bedoya was part of Cali’s squad that won the Categoria Primera A in 1998.
After making 118 league appearances for Deportivo Cali, Gerardo Bedoya moved to Argentina in 2001 and joined Racing Club.
The Colombian international played a significant role as Racing Club won the Apertura tournament in 2001. The Aperture trophy was Racing’s first title in 35 years.
Gerardo Bedoya returned to Deportivo Cali in 2003, making 18 appearances and scoring twice before joining Colon de Santa Fe in 2004.
The former defender made 33 appearances for Colon before joining Puebla in 2005. After making 15 appearances for Puebla, Bedoya joined Boca Juniors in the same year.
The Colombian international later played for Atletico Nacional, Millonairos, Envigado, Boyaca Chico, Santa Fe, Fortaleza and Cucuta Deportivo.
During his second spell with Santa Fe, Gerardo Bedoya played a significant role as the team won the Categoria Primera A in 2012. It was Santa Fe’s first title in 37 years.
Gerardo Bedoya retired from football after his time with Cucuta Deportivo in 2015. He scored four goals in 16 appearances for the club.
Bedoya played 552 club games and scored 52 times for 13 different clubs.
International Career
Gerardo Bedoya was one of the key players in Colombia’s national team between 2000 and 2009. The currently 46-year-old made 49 appearances for Colombia during his prime.
Bedoya scored his first goal for Colombia on February 19, 2000, during a CONCACAF Gold Cup match against the United States. He had made his debut for the Colombian national team seven days before against Jamaica.
The legendary defender was part of Colombia’s squad that won the Copa America tournament played in 2001.

Gerardo Bedoya, nicknamed the Beast, is best known for accumulating more red cards than any other football player in the game’s history.
Bedoya received 46 red cards during his time as a professional footballer. Fourteen of those red cards came during his spell with Deportivo Cali.
Gerardo Bedoya received ten red cards during his spell with Independiente Santa Fe.
His 41st red card as a professional footballer also earned him a suspension for the next 15 matches. Bedoya received the red card in the Bogota derby between Millonairos and his side Independiente Santa Fe on September 23, 2012.
He kicked Millonairos player Jhonny Ramirez using his elbow and then aimed a kick to his head.
Gerardo Bedoya has since received two more red cards in his managerial career. The Colombian international received his first red card as a coach in 2016 during his time with Santa Fe.
He was sent off from the dugout just 21 minutes into a league match between Santa Fe and Junior FC. Gerardo Bedoya’s sent-off was because he directed an onslaught of abuse at the match’s referee after Junior scored an equalizer.

Despite being a good footballer who scored stunning goals for the different clubs he played for, Gerardo Bedoya is mostly remembered for his red cards.
According to Omar Vasquez, a former Colombian winger, Bedoya was a winner and a history maker who won titles with some of the best teams in Argentina and Colombia.
Well, it is unlikely that Gerardo Bedoya’s record of most red cards is likely to be broken any time soon.
Sergio Ramos is second on the list of players with the most red cards in football history. The Paris Saint-Germain star has so far received 27 red cards in his professional career.
