Borna Coric Defeats Stefanos Tsitsipas to claim the Cincinatti Open title.

Borna Coric rounded off a dream week by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the Cincinnati championship and become the lowest-rated winner of a Masters 1000 tournament.

Following his astonishing victories over Rafael Nadal and  Cameron Norrie and others, he defeated Tsitsipas 7-6(0) 6-2

After losing to Novak Djokovic in his only prior Masters’s final in Shanghai, which took place in 2018, this is Coric’s first title at this level and his third overall in the ATP.

Borna Coric has had an incredible form after his comeback

As a result, the player who once held the position of world No. 12 has become only the fourth person from Croatia to win the Masters 1000 title.

Additionally, his comeback from a lengthy injury is gathering significant momentum.

Due to a right shoulder injury in 2021, Coric could only play nine matches that year. This season had been relatively unremarkable until the beginning of this week when he defeated Nadal, who has won 22 times at the Grand Slam tournament.

Coric acknowledged that his victory in the second round against the king of clay was the inciting incident, but he suggested that being grounded was the key to what happened next.

“It has happened to me before where I’ve beaten big players and then lost the next day. So, I was very calm and focused. I knew it wasn’t the end of the tournament and wanted to stay calm and focused and I think that’s what I did.”

The newly appointed No. 2 player for Croatia acknowledged that their victory in the second round over the Spaniard was the impetus for their rise but suggested that maintaining their composure was the most crucial factor in what came next.

The 25-year-old player continued to turn back the clock as he advanced through the rounds, but Tsitsipas got off to a better start in the championship match.

Tsitsipas dictated and dominated the rallies with some calm but hard-hitting forehands, which allowed him to win the game.

Stefanos Tsitsipas

The fourth seed appeared to have everything under control as he clinched a quick break and raced into a 3-0 lead. He only lost two points while he was doing so.

Borna Coric is now ranked no 29 in the world

After that, Borna Coric who will move up to No. 29 in the world due to his performance in Cincinnati, overcame three break point opportunities to claw out a long hold and draw the set at 4-4.

Tsitsipas, who will now move up to fifth in the standings, fought hard in the following game as he hit back from 40-0 to test Coric’s resolve in a lengthy face-off at the double.

He also moved up one spot in the rankings due to this victory. However, the underdog did not back down and successfully consolidated his lead before breaking again on his second match point to clinch the most significant achievement of his professional career.
