Lionel Messi is the undisputed leader in the Spanish La Liga in terms of goals scored. In only 520 games, he has scored 474 goals. Cristiano Ronaldo has the second-best total of 311 goals.

This record may never be broken by Messi’s incredible longevity and scoring ability.

The exploits of Lionel Messi in the UEFA Champions League are well-known. One of the records he holds is the most goals scored in a single club competition. In a show of dedication, the forward scored 123 goals for FC Barcelona.

Players such as Lionel Messi and Ronaldo were born with the ability to score a lot of goals in the UCL. The Argentine holds the record for most goals scored in the group stages. He is currently the footballer with the most goals in the Champions League group stages, with 76 strikes.

2. Most goals in a calendar year

Lionel Messi scored 91 goals for club and country in a calendar year, one of the most humble opinion individual statistics ever. 79 of the 91 strikes were for FC Barcelona, with the rest for the national team.

This record may stand the test of time, as Gerd Muller set the previous record of 85 goals in 1972.

1. Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner

Lionel Messi’s most famous and perhaps most difficult to break the record is his seven Ballon d’Or victories. He won all seven individual awards while playing for Barcelona, two more than Ronaldo.

His most recent success came in 2021, and it will be exciting to see if Messi can add to his seven with another few years to play.
