Manchester United’s quest for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been thwarted after the midfielder told ESPN that he would prefer to remain at Camp Nou.

The Dutch international is under contract with Barcelona until 2026 after joining Ajax for $80.7 million in 2019. Still, the rise of Pedri and Gavi in midfield has cast doubt on his future.

Erik ten Hag, the new manager of Manchester United, is keen on signing the Dutch international as part of his Old Trafford restore.

The two enjoyed success together at Ajax. On the other hand, De Jong has stated that he is eager to compete for a place at the Spanish giants.

“I prefer to stay with Barcelona,” De Jong told ESPN on Tuesday.

De Jong won the Dutch title and advanced to the Champions League semifinals at Ajax under Ten Hag before joining Barcelona in 2019, but he had a difficult start at the club.

This season, Barcelona finished second in LaLiga, trailing bitter rivals Real Madrid, who also won the Champions League.

At the same time, Xavi’s side was defeated by Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarterfinals.

According to sources, Ten Hag wants to put Barcelona on the spot this summer with a bid for De Jong, even with his desire to stay at Camp Nou.

Barcelona may still sell De Jong as the club continues to struggle financially.

LaLiga has cut their spending limit to minus $154 million, the only negative cap in the league, and they can only spend 25% of any savings on wages or transfer fees until they reach their limit.

De Jong, worth around $80 million, is one of Barcelona’s most expensive assets, but the 26-year-old has denied any contact with Ten Hag or United.

“I’m saying that there is absolutely nothing of an agreement or anything official,” he added.
