The football summer transfer window is open once again in Europe and the Premier League has already seen a record transfer and if sports rumours are anything to go by, then this summer will see the Premier League’s most expensive transfer in history, as champions, Manchester City have already bided £100 million for both Aston Villa winger Jack Grealish and Tottenham Hotspurs forward Harry Kane.

Should Grealish move, he will become the most expensive player in the history of the Premier League.

England winger Jadon Sancho has signed from Manchester United for a record £77 million becoming the second most expensive English footballer after Harry Maguire who joined Manchester United from Leicester two years ago for a record £80 million.

Maguire however is not the most expensive transfer in the history of the English Premier League, other players of different nationalities have been signed at much higher prices.

Last summer saw Manchester City’s center half Ruben Dias and Chelsea forward Kai Havertz enter the top ten most expensive arrivals in England.

Today, we look at the top 11 most expensive signings ever to be made in the Premier League which includes the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea, and now includes the Sancho deal and how they performed in their first season.

  1. RUBEN DIAS (Benfica to Manchester City in 2020) – £62 million

In his debut season, the center half played a major role in ensuring City are the Champions of England for the third time in four seasons. The 23-year-old was praised by many for his defensive role even earning himself the Premier League player of the season award and named into the Premier League team of the year 2020/21.

  1. RODRI (Atletico Madrid to Manchester City in 2019) – £64 million

Rodri became Manchester City’s most expensive player in their history when he made the switch in 2019, in his first season he quickly fitted into the first team even benching City’s captain Fernandinho in that midfield defensive role. He won the Carabao Cup in his first season.

  1. ALISSON BECKER (Roma to Liverpool in 2018) – £67 million

The Brazilian goalkeeper became the most expensive goalkeeper in Premier League history, well a record that was lasted for only two weeks. In his first season, he had the record least clean sheets in Liverpool’s 20-year Premier League history. He helped Liverpool win their fifth UEFA Champions League title in his debut season of 2018/19.

8. KEPA ARRIZABALAGA (Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea in 2018) – £71million

The Spanish goalkeeper broke the transfer record for a goalkeeper in the whole world, a record that stands up to this day. He had a quiet first season managing 14 clean sheets in 36 appearances, he however saved two penalties in the UEFA Europa League semifinals clash Vs. Eintracht Frankfurt to send Chelsea to the finals where they beat Arsenal 4-1to lift the Europa League Trophy, things have been a miss for the 26-year-old and have now been pushed second in the pecking order at Chelsea after the arrival of Senegalese Eduardo Mendy.

7. KAI HAVERTZ (Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea in 2020) – £72 million

The 21-year-old became the most expensive German player in the world with that fee, surpassing Timo Werner’s £52 million when he also signed for Chelsea a couple of months earlier.

The left-footed forward had a tough time adapting to the Premier League and struggled in the first few months, often coming from the bench. However, he scored a hat trick on his first start for Chelsea in a Cup match against Barnsley, things have however been good for the youngster who has enjoyed a good run since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel at the Bridge who is also a German in January. Kai scored the decisive goal in the UEFA Champions League Finals to hand Chelsea their second Champions League trophy.

6. NICOLAS PEPE (Lille to Arsenal in 2019) – £72million

Pepe is yet to show his best for Arsenal, since arriving in London, the Ivory Coast international managed only 15 goals in 60 premier league appearances and further seven assists.

He managed only five goals in his first season at Emirates.

Arguably the best ever signing Liverpool ever made in the last decade, he has become one of the best defenders in the world since joining Liverpool, winning the UEFA Champions League in his debut season and playing a major defensive role to help Liverpool win the Premier League title for the first time in over 30 years.
