Devin Booker, The Engine Behind Phoenix Suns Success


Devin Armani Booker is an American professional basketball player who plays in the National Basketball Association (NBA) league as a shooting guard for the Phoenix Suns. He was selected in the 2015 NBA draft in 13th overall. He had a successful college basketball career and became one of the most famous professional basketball players in the NBA.

Booker was born on 30th October 1996 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. He was born and brought up by his parents Melvin Booker and Veronica Gutierrez Booker. His mother is a practicing cosmetologist while his father is a former basketball player who also trained Devin in his initial years.

His family is of the Christian religion and he is of mixed ethnicity because his mother is Mexican American and his father is African American. Devin started his basketball career at the Grandville high school in Michigan and played his freshman year with the school’s basketball team. He changed school the following year after his family moved to Mississippi to live with his father where he joined the Moss Point high school where he was coached by his father. Devin graduated from high school in 2014 and joined the University of Kentucky in Lexington Kentucky for his college education.

In the university, he joined the University of Kentucky basketball team where he participated in the 2014/15 season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) league. However, He did not graduate from the university and forgave his three years of college after he got drafted by the NBA on April 9, 2015.

In the 2014/15 season in the NCAA league, he had an average score of 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 21.5 minutes per game.

He also helped lead Kentucky to a 38-1 record and the NCAA Final Four. The 38 wins are tied for the most in NCAA history as the Wildcats also won SEC regular season (18-0) and tournament titles.



On 25th June 2015, Devin was selected with the 13th overall pick by Phoenix Suns in the 2015 NBA draft and that is when he started his NBA journey with the suns.

Since 2015, Devin has been dedicated to the Suns playing for them all through the six seasons.

In 2016, He was placed 4th in the NBA Rookie of the year Award Voting list and named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. In the 2016/17 season, he passed hall of Famer the late Kobe Bryant and became the highest scorer. He ended the season with an average of 22.1 points per game, a near 9 point increment from his 13.8 points in 2015/16.

In 2017, Devin scored Suns record 70 points at Boston which included a franchise Sun’s history of 52 points in the second half.

In the 2020/21 season, Devin Played and started in 67 games in the NBA and averaged 33.9 minutes which was 24th best in the league, 25.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. He also Shot 48.4% from the field, 34.0% from 3-point, and 86.7% from the foul line which was 28th best in the NBA. Overall, the 24 years old was Ranked 24th best in the NBA efficiency with 21.4 efficiency points.

Devin has also been a member of the United States Basketball 2018-2020 men’s national team, he was named in the team that won the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro although he did not play in any match in that tournament.

In February 2020, he was named to the United States 2020 Olympics Men’s Basketball team that was rescheduled for July 2021 and he is expected to feature in the tournament scheduled to take place in Tokyo Japan.


In 2016, Devin was named to the NBA All-Rookie first team, the following year, he was voted a finalist for the performance of the year in the fan vote for NBA awards 2017 for his 70 point game at Boston.

The 24-year-old was a finalist in the 2018/19 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. In 2019/20, he was named to the NBA All-Seeding first team and was a runner-up for NBA player of the seeding games.

In 2020, he was named a 2020 NBA All-star.

As of 2021, Devin is the highest-paid player by Phoenix Suns earning a whopping $27.28 million, Forbes also estimates the guard earns around $6 million from endorsements every year, from companies like Nike. He has an estimated net worth of $65 million according to Forbes.


Devin has been on the headlines for the past several years for his good charity work across the globe. In 2020, he donated $100,000 in and around Phoenix and also led a campaign to raise funds for the community during the Covid-19 lockdown
