His parents are Ema Matthews and Brian Matthews. He has two sisters named Alexandria who is the first born and Breyana.

Auston is also the alternate captain for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League. He developed an interest in hockey after being inspired by Phoenix Coyotes. He also played baseball and hockey during his childhood.

Auston is a product of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League (USHL) and he played for the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League.

He was drafted into the National Hockey League (NHL) in the year 2016 and interestingly won a Swiss Cup title the same year.

The Toronto Maple Leafs selected him the first after being widely considered the top prospect of the draft.
