Zimbabwe’s Kasuza ruled out of second Test with concussion - Sports Leo

After being struck on the helmet for the second time in two Tests, Zimbabwe opener Kevin Kasuza was stretchered off the field with what was later revealed to be a mild concussion on Wednesday, ruling him out of the remainder of the second and final Test against Sri Lanka in Harare.

The incident occurred on the third morning, when Kasuza, fielding at forward short leg, was struck on the head by a pull shot from Kusal Mendis, whereafter he immediately went down, in visible pain, even as the ball ricocheted towards square leg, where Carl Mumba took the catch to send the batsman back.

Kasuza was subsequently taken to the hospital, which confirmed the concussion, and he continues to be monitored by the medical staff. In his absence, Timycen Maruma was named as a like-for-like replacement.

This is the second consecutive concussion Kasuza has suffered, in his debut international series.

The incident was a near-exact repeat of what had happened in the first Test. Then too Kasuza was struck on the head, fielding at the same position, off a shot struck by the same batsman. On that occasion, he suffered a delayed concussion, which eventually ruled him out of the match. He was replaced by Brian Mudzinganyama then.

Despite the torrid start, Kasuza gave a good account of himself in his maiden series, making 63 on debut and following it up with a gritty 38, off 87 balls, in the second Test.

Zimbabwe lost the first Test despite a strong first-innings performance, but a much-improved bowling performance this time around has put them in a good position to square the series, with a lead of 175 in the second innings, with nine wickets in hand.
