Cape Town City have wasted no time in replacing sacked coach Benni McCarthy who was shown the exit door two days ago.
A Cape Town City social media post on Wednesday informed that Riekerink was the new coach. He sat in the stands at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday evening to watch his new club play Polokwane City. He would have been pleased with what he saw as City picked up a 5-3 win.
The haste with which Riekerink was appointed suggests that City have been on a mission to find a replacement for McCarthy for a while. McCarthy’s sacking was announced in the early hours of Tuesday morning and the next day the new coach arrives from Europe and is in the Mother City watching the team play.
Before the match, Riekerink was pictured with a City scarf on the pitch. When it appeared on City’s Twitter account later he was quoted: “I’m really proud to be back here, and I’m really proud to coach this team.”
The 56-year-old Riekerink retired as a player in 1993 in the Netherlands where he played for three clubs in a career spanning eight seasons.
He started a coaching career with leading Dutch club Ajax and remained there for seven seasons.
After that, he held several coaching positions in Europe before he moved to China where he mentored junior national teams.
He returned to Europe to manage Galatasaray (Turkey) and SC Heerenveen (Netherlands).
Since April last year, he was a free agent.
After McCarthy’s sacking, speculation was rife that City would turn to the former Ajax Cape Town’s go-to man Mushin Erturgal, the Turkish-born coach who had worked for several PSL teams in the past.
