African countries gear up for Victoria Cup rugby tournament in Zimbabwe

Victoria Cup Zimbabwe - Sports Leo

The first round of rugby matches in the Victoria Cup which will see Zambia and other African countries taking part will start on July 13 at a venue in Zimbabwe still to be confirmed.

This tournament should certainly raise the standards of rugby in Africa as was shown last weekend when Kenya and Uganda faced off in Nairobi in a tournament called the Elgon Cup.

Zambia and Zimbabwe have been playing against each other for some time in the ‘Battle of the Zambezi’ which sees one nation host the other on alternate years.

The Zambia Rugby Union has also been working behind the scenes to ensure a smooth ending to the 2019 local Rugby League while also putting plans together for the trip across the border.

The technical team has already identified players to be called up to a camp immediately after the League’s final game set for Diggers Rugby Club in Kitwe on Saturday, July 6.
