Former American basketball player Dwyane Wade was once in the limelight on a controversy with his first wife Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, whom he met in high school and started dating, got married but divorced a few years later.

During his playing years, he played for 16 years in the NBA and spent most of his time with the Miami Heat. His journey has however not been easy but determination and hard work saw him through, to even being inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.

Wade hung his boots in 2019 and co-founded a baby care company with his current wife, he also has several business ventures. He is also a broadcaster and partly owns the Utah Jazz team, which allows him to stay connected to the NBA world.

Born and raised in a challenging environment, basketball was his route to escape and he spent most of his time training. He excelled in high school and was fortunate to get a scholarship to Marquette University where he led the team to their first Final Four appearance.

Wade was drafted by the Miami Heat in the 2003 NBA draft and spent most of his time playing for the team in his 16-year career in the NBA. He has won several honors individually and as a team.

He retired from playing basketball in 2019 and he runs his business, He is also a broadcaster. In 2023, he was inducted into the  Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

He was born on January 17 1982 in Chicago, Illinois, United States to Dwyane Wade and Jolinda Wade and has an elder sister by the name Trail. His growing up was a bit complicated due to his parents separation at his tender age.

The divorce affected his mother and as a result, she fell into addiction and this drove young Wade to play basketball that became his solace. He has a blended family as he shares two children with his first wife, he has a son with a lady by the name Aja Metoyer, and has a daughter with his current wife Gabrielle Union.

His second daughter with his first wife,  Zaya, is a transgender and he has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, using his platform to promote inclusivity.

Just like any other love story, a start is always sweet and Wade’s was not an exemption. The two first met grade school when they were young and their love story blossomed as time went by, becoming high school sweethearts.

Since the two met when they were still young, Wade had to develop his basketball career that was taking off and they likely faced some challenges in balancing the relationship with his basketball demands.

Despite the challenges, the two welcomed their first born son and shortly after, they got married. Five years later, they welcomed their daughter Zaya and according to some online information, they parted ways months after her birth.

Meaning, their marriage had hurdles even before their second born daughter was born and a few months after her birth, Wade filed for a divorce, a process that took years to finalize.

WHY DID DWYANE DIVORCE HIS FIRST WIFE?

Growing up in different environments, the two were not prepared for the changes in their lives and especially after Wade prospering in his NBA career. His wife accused him of infidelity, which he denied.

During their divorce process, there were disagreements about spousal and child support, the most contentious one being child support. Wade was favored by the judgment of taking full custody while his ex-wife was awarded limited visitation rights.

After the divorce with his first wife, Wade got married to Gabrielle Union and together they have a daughter by the name Kaavia James. The two are business partners having founded a company by the name “PROUDLY”.

The company was launched in 2023 and it is a baby care brand that focuses on developing products formulated for skin care needs of children with melanin skin.
