At the age of eleven, the player joined Santos FC’s youth system and his performance led the European clubs to fight for him and Barcelona secured his transfer for a record-breaking fee. After four seasons with Barcelona, he moved to Paris with another hit record from Paris Saint-Germain. Where he continued to entertain, leading the team to domestic dominance with Ligue 1 titles and Coupe de France trophies.
In August 2023, he signed with Saudi club Al-Hilal at a transfer fee of $98 million with Paris Saint-Germain, a significant price though lower than his initial move to PSG, making it the highest transfer fee ever paid by a Saudi Arabian club.
What did PSG expect from Neymar?
Neymar leaving PSG and his teammate Lionel Messi felt like the end of an era at the club as they were short of massive expectations despite massive investments in the squad. He alongside Mbappe was supposed to elevate the club to one of Europe’s super teams but the club’s status did not progress much during his time in Paris.
However, they reached the final of the Champions League in 2020 and the semi-finals in 2021, the only two seasons where Neymar managed to play regularly. The player had recurring injuries and went for an ankle operation, the club expected his recovery to put him back on track for good, unfortunately, they didn’t get a chance to enjoy the benefits after his transfer to Al-Hilal.
Neymar’s Transfer to Al-Hilal
It was not an easy task for Al-Hilal to sign Neymar as there was a huge transfer fee involved and extraordinary wages that are significantly above what European clubs are willing to pay since he is a valuable asset to any club.

They paid a transfer fee of $98 million to PSG and he signed a two-year contract worth $275 million per year, making him one of the highest-paid athletes in the world.
