Alessia Russo’s contract with Manchester United comes to an end in the summer of 2023. According to reports, the Euro 2022 winner has turned down an offer to extend her time at Manchester United. However, the club has maintained that they are not ready to release Alessia despite talks over a new deal stagnating.
Alessia is currently free to talk with other clubs since she has less than six months with the Women’s Super League giants. The 23-year-old is one of the top players in the league, and her departure could affect Manchester United’s title race.
As a result, it could take a huge sum to sign her before the transfer window closes. But with the initial amount Arsenal have offered, it couldn’t be a surprise if they come with another bid and sign her before the window closes.
Besides Arsenal, other top clubs in the United States and Europe have also shown interest in Alessia Russo. It is reported that Chelsea, where she began her football career, and European champions Lyon could make an effort to sign her before the deadline.
If neither club manages to sign the England international this window, Manchester United risk losing her for free in the summer. At that point, she will be free to join the club of her choice.
Before becoming a professional, Alessia Russo went through Charlton Athletic and Chelsea’s youth system. In January 2017, she left Chelsea and joined newly-promoted WSL 2 side Brighton & Hove Albion. Russo scored her first Brighton goal one month later during their 1-1 draw with London Bees.
Between 2017 and 2019, Alessia played in the United States for North Carolina Tar Heels. She won two Atlantic Coast Conference titles and two ACC Women’s Soccer Tournament titles before returning to England.
On September 10, 2020, Manchester United signed Alessia Russo on a two-year contract with the option for another year. She has been a crucial player for the team, scoring 11 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions last season. The 23-year-old was named the inaugural winner of the team’s Players’ Player of the Year award.

Alessia Russo has also been a key player for England since making her senior debut in 2020. She has made 17 appearances and scored ten goals, including four as England won last year’s Euros tournament. Her back-heeled finish in the semi-final against Sweden was nominated for the FIFA Puskas Award.
