Kenyan female driver Maxine Wahome is battling a court case following allegations of battering her boyfriend Asad Khan.

She spent two nights in police custody for reportedly assaulting Khan before being freed on Sh100,000 cash bail by a Nairobi Court on Wednesday.

Wahome made history in June of this year when, at the age of 26, she became the first woman to win the WRC3.

The police requested that she be held for 14 days while they filed charges against her for leaving Khan with grievous injuries. However, Magistrate Benard Ochoi turned down their request.

Her defence team requested the court to gag the media on reporting about the issue citing that she is the victim.  The court in declining the request noted that these claims haven’t been substantiated.

Asserting that Wahome is the victim and not the aggressor, her attorneys had Tuesday requested the court to order a gag order on the media so they would not report on the case.

The state’s request to hold her for two weeks was denied by Ochoi, who claimed there were no compelling reasons to keep the defendant in police custody.

She must show up every Thursday at Kilimani Police Station to meet with the investigating officer, according to Ochoi’s directive.

Khan remains unconscious and is in critical condition at the high-dependency unit, according to the police’s request to have her held for 14 days.

He testified before the court that the woman is suspected of inflicting the man’s deep cut on his ankle. Wahome was apprehended by the police after Khan’s brother reported an assault incident to the police.

She was at their home when police picked her up, the investigating officer told the court. The cops discovered there were blood spatters in the home during the arrest, along with broken glasses.

Wahome, however, asserted that the man injured himself while he was hitting her and claimed to be a victim through the help of her attorneys. Khan is yet to respond to the claims since he’s unconscious.

His legal team told the court that no one really knows who the victim in this case is until the inquiry is complete.  She received Sh1 million from her sponsors, Safaricom PLC five months ago after winning a major WRC rally.

Wahome was one of four rally stars sponsored by Safaricom for the World Rally Championship Safari Rally. Along with the other members of the FIA Rally Star squad, Mcrae Kimathi, Jeremy Wahome, and hamza Anwar, Wahome got Ksh1 million reward and sponsorship to the Rally of Estonia and the Acropolis Rally in Greece.

Only Mcrae and Jeremy had previous experience competing in European races out of the entire squad.

Wahome was also named the LG sportswoman of the month in June following her historic performance at the Safari Rally. She became the first woman to win a significant World rally Championship in nearly three decades.

She performed outstandingly to win the WRC3 Category in the Safari Rally, making her the first female driver to do so since Isolde Holdereid in the Group N Cup.
