D’Angelo Russell was recently fined $25,000 by the NBA for abusing a referee after the Lakers playoff loss to the Denver Nuggets when his team was eliminated from the playoffs on losing to the Nuggets in Game 5.

The American professional basketball player who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers was upset and he directed his anger to the official by verbally insulting him, an act that is considered disrespectful and unprofessional by the NBA.

As a result of this unprofessional act, the NBA took action by fining the player $25,000 for his verbal abuse  fine that could be a penalty for a player’s misconduct in the NBA. However, this is not the first controversy in his career as he has been involved in others.

His career journey began at  Montverde Academy in Florida where he won High School National Championships, before moving to Ohio State University and after one year, he declared for the 2015 NBA draft.

He was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2015 NBA draft and two years later, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, then to the Golden State Warriors after two seasons, though he had a short stay and was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In 2023, he was traded back to the Los Angeles Lakers where he currently plays.

Russell is a 28-year old American professional basketball player who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA. His career journey can be traced back in high school where he won back-to-back High School national Championships and also won a McDonald’s All-American game and the Jordan Brand Classic.

He then enrolled at the Ohio State university and played for one season for the Buckeyes, and on a successful freshman year, he declared for the 2015 NBA draft, where he was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers.

His time with the Lakers led to several challenges on and off the court and while he tried to improve, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, a place that provided a fresh start and he became a scoring threat to the Nets young core.

Two years later, he was again traded to the Golden State Warriors on a brief spell before he was again traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and then back to his current team Lakers, reuniting with the team that drafted him.

Russell personal life

The 28-year old was born on February 23 1996 in Louisville, Kentucky to Keisha and Anthony Russell. He has four siblings, three brothers and a sister. Russel attended his first educational institution at Central high School in his hometown but then transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida.

He played basketball at high school and even led his team to winning a high school national tournament championship. He was recruited by several universities but chose Ohio State university where he played college basketball for the Buckeyes for one season, and in the next, he declared for the NBA draft.

He has a baby with one lady Laura Ivaniukas but they are not married.

Russell controversies

Throughout his career, the player has had several controversies and the major one was in his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers where a video surfaced , when he was filming his teammate, discussing his relationship with his then fiancee.

The incident cast a shadow over his character and maturity at the time though there were no NBA violations. However, beyond this, he is so focused on his career and avoids any negative attention.

Russel fined by NBA

In a recent game between the Denver Nuggets, Russell found himself on the wrong side of the NBA for abusing a referee after the Lakers playoff loss to the Denver Nuggets, when his team was eliminated from the playoffs on losing to the Nuggets in Game 5.

This act was considered to be against the rules of the NBA and he was fined a sum of $25,000 for conducting himself unprofessionally.
