  • He is a football manager
  • He previously worked for Tottenham but left a year ago
  • He is being linked with a move to Chelsea

Antonio Conte is said to have received a lucrative contract from Chelsea, as the perfect replacement for Mauricio Pochettino who will be leaving the club this summer, who has been the club’s manager since July 2023.

After his appointment, questions have risen if he is the perfect replacement for Pochettino and yes, because he has a history of winning trophies, having secured league titles in Italy and England.

He has previously managed top clubs in Europe and his tactical systwith vast Premier League experience is what Chelsea could be looking for. However, he also tends to leave clubs after a brief period of managing and this could be the major reason as to why most people are questioning his appointment, fearing that his stay at Chelsea will be short term.

Conte seemed to be at the heart of several clubs including AC Milan and Napoli but at the moment, they are not pushing for him. He was previously the manager of Chelsea for two seasons between 2016 and 2018.

In his first season as the Chelsea coach, Conte led the team to a Premier League title win and in the following season, they won the FA Cup though they finished second in the league.

He progressed through and his impressive performance earned him a place with Juventus, where he established himself as a legend for thirteen years and even captained the team for eight years, leading them to numerous accolades.

He also represented the Italian national team and participated in the 1994 Word Cup and Euro 2000, before hanging up his boots in 2004. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into management.

Conte’s transition into management

His first managerial job was with Italy’s Serie B with Arrezo for a brief stint, then to Bari where he led them to a Serie A promotion. Since then he has managed several clubs including Atalanta and Siena.

He returned to his former club Juventus, this time as their manager in 2011 and under his leadership, they secured three consecutive Serie A titles that established him as one of Europe’s best managers, giving him attention.

He was part of the Italian team and after his transition into a manager, he returned to his home team leading them to a quarter final finish at Euro 2016 and in the same year, he was appointed Chelsea’s manager in the Premier League.

His play style was well accepted by the players and in his first season, they clinched the Premier League title. However, the following season was challenging due to players injuries though they secured a second-place league finish.

Conte fell out with Chelsea’s board over transfer policies and this led to his departure in 2018. In the following year, he took over at Italy club Inter Milan, and his first season was not welcoming as they did not secure any trophy. However, in the following season they rose and won their first Serie A title.

At the time, Inter Milan was facing financial constraints and he left the club in 2021, and signed a one and a half year contract with Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, with the option for a further year.

Conte being linked to Chelsea

Since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in March 2023, he has not been managing any club and rumor has it that he is linked with Chelsea, and has signed a lucrative deal, though this has not yet been confirmed.

However, he may be a perfect fit to succeed Mauricio Pochettino who is leaving the club this summer. The advantage of having him over other candidates could be his vast experience in the Premier League and, it would be a continuation of where he left since he is conversant with the club’s policies.
