- Borussia Dortmund secured a crucial 1-0 victory over PSG in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final tie
- Dortmund’s win did not only give them advantage heading to the second leg but also confirmed Germany will have five teams playing in Champions League group stage next season
Borussia Dortmund secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final tie.
The only goal of the match was scored by Niclas Fullkrug in the first half. The 31-year-old brilliantly controlled a long ball before firing the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma and into the back of the net in the 36th minute.
This was the third Champions League meeting between Dortmund and PSG as the two sides already met on the group stages. Despite the Parisians controlling most of the proceedings, it was Dortmund who emerged victorious. Both teams missed several big chances that would have had a greater impact on the match played at Signal Iduna Park.

Speaking after the match, Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic said his side deserved the win and they will also be aiming to secure victory in the second leg. Dortmund and PSG meet on Tuesday in Paris after which the winner will progress to this season’s UEFA Champions League final to be played in Wembley.
“It was a well-deserved win, a good team performance. We could have scored more goals, but so could they. That’s why the result is OK from my point of view. We ran a lot, but that’s necessary in a game like this. You have to earn your way to Wembley. All we need now is a draw in the second leg, but we also want to win next week.” Edin Terzic is quoted by SuperSport.
Dortmund’s win did not only give them advantage heading to the second leg but also confirmed Germany will have five teams playing in Champions League group stage next season. The Black and Yellows are likely going to be the main beneficiaries as they’re placed fifth on the Bundesliga table with three games left to play.
Jadon Sancho Shines In Borussia Dortmund Win
On Wednesday, Jadon Sancho showed the world a glimpse of his brilliance on the pitch as Dortmund played PSG at home. The Manchester United winger in exile was in dazzling form and gave Nuno Mendes a very hard time on the flanks.
The Sancho that was on the pitch last night is not the same we’ve seen flop at Manchester United before being loaned out after falling out with manager Erik ten Hag. Sancho was one of the best players in the world during his initial spell at Dortmund but after a big move to United in the summer of 2021, he struggled to get to his best.
The 24-year-old, who is one of the players Manchester United could axe this summer, showed creativity and managed to steal the spotlight playing on the same pitch as Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.
Nuno Mendes couldn’t deal with Sancho and PSG now have less than six days to figure out how they’re going to contain the BVB man during the second leg.

In one brilliant moment in the second half, Sancho completely showed his prowess by dinking the ball over Mendes’ leg and then passing it to Fullkrug, who somehow missed the seater. Well, that was not the only moment that Dortmund failed to increase their advantage in this tie. Sancho was again denied a goal involvement as his brilliant one-two play with Brandt ended with Marquinhos blocking the German’s effort.
PSG also had their own missed chances in this game and came close to finding the equalizer shortly after the break as both Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi hit the post. Fabian had the biggest chance to level the scores but failed to keep his header on target.
