Ruben Amorim has been hitting the headlines for the past few weeks due to his links with Europe’s top clubs. The Portuguese, who is the current manager of Sporting CP, has been identified as the man who could replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool this summer. However, the Reds are yet to reach an agreement with him and he reportedly met with West Ham a few days ago.
Amorim joined Sporting in 2020 and has done a great job at the club. He already won the league title and is looking set to repeat the feat this season as his side are currently seven points clear at top of the table with four games left to play. He has also led Sporting to the final of the Portuguese Cup where they’ll face Porto.

According to reports, there is a high chance that Amorim will not be at Sporting next season. The 39-year-old’s next destination is likely to be the Premier League as he is a big fan of the league. Amorim watches Premier League matches every week and is particularly impressed with how Manchester City and Brighton play, as per BBC.
As we wait to see if Ruben Amorim will extend his stay at Sporting or join a top Premier League club, here are things we thought you should know about him.
1. Amorim Was a Versatile Player
Just like many other top managers in the football world, Amorim was also a footballer. He spent most of his playing career with Belenenses and Benfica before retiring in 2017. According to sources, he was a versatile player who could play in midfield or right-back.
2. Played For Portugal At Two World Cups
Ruben Amorim was one of the best Portuguese players during his days and it’s no surprise that he represented the Portugal national team at two FIFA World Cups.
Amorim was not part of the initial squad chosen to play at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but he got a call-up after Luis Nani suffered an injury. He would make his debut in his country’s first group stage match against Ivory Coast. He was again called to represent his country four years later in Brazil.
The 39-year-old earned 14 caps for the Portugal national team from 2010 to 2014.
3. Injuries Player A Role On His Early Retirement

The football world never got to see Amorim’s full potential due to his struggle with injuries. After a treble-winning campaign with Benfica in 2014, the midfielder picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which would see him stay out of action from August until February 2015. He was later loaned out to Qatari club Al-Wakrah but things were never the same after his return.
Amorim spent one year at Benfica, something which led to him terminating his contract with the club and then announcing his retirement from the beautiful game in 2017.
4. Prefers The Same Formation Used By Xabi Alonso
The manager who has taken the football world by a storm this season is Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard has done a great job at Bayer Leverkusen leading the German club to their first-ever Bundesliga title with a few games left to play. On top of that, his side are unbeaten across all competitions.
The formation which Alonso uses at Leverkusen is 3-4-3, which Ruben Amorim also prefers to play with at Sporting CP.
5. Chelsea Wanted To Sign Him Before Graham Potter

Chelsea saw Amorim’s potential early on but opted not to sign him. The Portuguese was seen as an ideal choice to replace Thomas Tuchel but the club’s management opted to go for Graham Potter. Perhaps they could come to regret the decision because Potter’s tactics never worked at the club and his replacement Mauricio Pochettino is yet to do deliver as expected.
6. Ruben Amorim Has Worked With Jose Mourinho And Are Still Close
Amorim was among three students from the 2018 edition of High Performance Football Coaching who did their internship under Jose Mourinho. The two still seem to be in touch as the Sporting manager revealed last year that Mourinho texted him after Roma and Sporting progressed to the next round of the Europa League.
