Simon Francis is a former English professional footballer who currently serves as the assistant first-team technical director at AFC Bournemouth. He was recently appointed as the head technical director by the club’s chairman following the resignation of Richard Hughes.

His appointment comes when they announced that Richard Hughes who has been leading is set to step away and Francis could take up the role having worked with Hughes, believing that he is the best due to his expertise.

During his playing years, Francis played for AFC Bournemouth for several seasons before retiring from professional football in 2020. Having been at the club for long, he was considered the best to be an assistant under Hughes and has shown his determination, earning him the promotion.

Francis’ experience spans playing, coaching young players through his academy, and working within Bournemouth’s recruitment department has proved that he has experience accessing various roles.

Francis was born in Nottingham, England on February 16, 1985, and began his profession by playing youth football for West Bridgford Colts. Since he was too young with undeveloped skills, he was rejected by Nottingham Forest and Notts County.

He joined Bradford City as a trainee and impressed during his time at South Nottingham College, making his professional debut for Bradford City against Nottingham Forest shortly after representing England U18.

Simon established himself as a regular starter for Bradford, making over 50 appearances and scoring his first career goal against Crystal Palace. Bradford was at the moment having financial difficulties and he was transferred to Sheffield United.

At Sheffield, he spent two seasons before joining Southend United for two seasons, then signed for AFC Bournemouth, a journey that marked the beginning of a long and successful association with the club.

He became a key player for Bournemouth under manager Eddie Howe and captained the team on numerous occasions, playing a crucial role in the club’s historic rise from League Two to the Premier League.

Francis announced his retirement from professional football in 2020 and established his football academy focusing on youth football development, and providing opportunities for young players in the Bournemouth area.

In 2021, he was called back to Bournemouth as an assistant first-team technical director, utilizing his experience and knowledge to support the club’s management team. He also played a key role in the club’s recruitment and development strategies.

He was recently promoted to the head technical director by Bournemouth’s chairman Bill Foley upon the departure of Richard Hughes.
