  • Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City have an agreement in place worth in the region of 40 million euros for James Maddison’s transfer
  • Newcastle United were also interested in signing Maddison but it seems the England international will be joining Spurs soon

James Maddison is now a step away from joining Tottenham Hotspur after the north London club reached an agreement with Leicester City over his transfer.

According to Sky Sports, Spurs and Leicester City have an agreement in place worth in the region of 40 million euros. Leicester were unwilling to sell Maddison in January but following their relegation at the end of the 2022-23 season, they decided to cash in.

In a post made by Fabrizio Romano this morning, Tottenham Hotspur and Maddison already agreed terms. Talks advanced to final stages last night and the next step is now medical tests. Documents will then be signed and James Maddison will officially become a Tottenham Hotspur player.

Maddison had only one year left on his contract with Leicester City. According to Daily Mail, the attacking midfielder will be earning 170,000 euros per week playing for Spurs. He looks set to bolster the resources of new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, who joined after leaving Celtic.

Newcastle United were also interested in signing Maddison but it seems the England international will be joining Tottenham Hotspur. Eddie Howe’s side, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season, have now shifted their attention to AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali.

Maddison will become Tottenham Hotspur’s second official signing of the season. This is after the arrival of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Serie A side Empoli. Spurs paid an initial fee of around 17 million euros for the 26-year-old. The club also made Dejan Kulusevski’s transfer permanent after agreeing on 25 million euros cut-price with his parent club Juventus.

James Maddison’s reputation has remained untarnished despite Leicester City being relegated to the Championship. The attacking midfielder managed 10 goals and nine assists in the Premier League last season as Leicester had a difficult season.

Maddison joined Leicester five years ago and has been one of the best players at the King Power Stadium over the years. There is no doubting the fact that Maddison is among the elite midfielders in England. Since joining Leicester, only Kevin De Bruyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold have created more chances than him. Also, only Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son have had more shots on goal.

Maddison is ranked in the top eight for assists and big chances created. Within that period, he has scored 43 goals, only 18 players have manged more than him. With such stats, it’s quite obvious that James Maddison is worth the amount Tottenham Hotspur are ready to pay.

James Maddison’s Leicester City teammate Harvey Barnes could join him in north London as he has interests from Arsenal and West Ham. Barnes could be waiting until the last days of the summer transfer window as Leicester determine his price.
