  • He is a Colombian professional footballer
  • He plays as a forward for Liverpool and the Colombia national team
  • His father still hopes he will have a chance to play in Spain

Liverpool’s forward, Luiz Diaz is being linked to Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. His father recently expressed his desire to see him play in Spain. Currently, there have been several injury cases at Antifield and this seems to be one of his father’s concerns.

The forward has been a valuable asset in Liverpool and this season, he has scored 11 goals and five assists in 39 appearances. Three of his strikes came from the Reds’ last seven league games and he is set to add more trophies.

Diaz also plays for his Colombia national team and has been away during the international break but is likely to return to Liverpool’s squad for the weekend’s showdown against Brighton.

During his time with the Colombian team, he captained them to a victory against Spain at the London stadium.

During the FA Cup defeat by Manchester United, Diaz was taken off before the final whistle, an incident that gave Klopp concern since he thought he had an injury from his international match.

Luiz Diaz biography

He is a Colombian professional footballer who plays as a winger for Premier League club Liverpool and the Colombia national team. He grew up in a football family as his father ran a small football academy, instilling in him the love of the game.

His talent was undeniable and at the age of 17, he impressed at an open trial for Atletico Junior and joined their youth team. He was selected for Colombia’s squad in the 2015 Copa Americana de Pueblos Indígenas.

His performance there caught the eye of Atletico Junior’s senior team and he was brought up, initially assigned to their farm team Barranquilla. He then earned a spot on Atletico Junior’s senior team, where he was instrumental in their success, helping them win two Categoria Primera A titles, a Copa Colombia and a Superliga Colombiana.

In 2019, he was signed by European giants FC Porto, he thrived in Portugal and won two Primeira Liga titles, a Taça de Portugal and a Supertaca Candido de Oliveira. Internationally, he represented the Colombia national team and won a Golden Boot award in the Copa America finals in 2021.

Diaz signs with Liverpool

In 2022, he joined Premier League club Liverpool. They secured his transfer from Porto and he quickly adapted to the Premier League’s intensity, playing a role in their run to the FA Cup and EFL Cup titles in his first season, showcasing his attacking potential.

He joined the club in  mid season and chipped in with 6 goals and 5 assists in the Premier League and he was a key player in the club’s run to the FA Cup and Carabao Cup Trophies. Knee injuries have hampered his playing time and consistency but his dribbling remains a threat.

Diaz’ father hopes he will play in Spain

The winger’s father expressed some interest in his son playing in Spain, probably for Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. However, the player seems content with playing for the Reds though the father seems to take pride in his son’s achievements elsewhere-Spain.

Is Diaz’s future at Liverpool certain?

His future at the club is uncertain at the moment. Liverpool might prioritize extending contracts for some of their high-profile players like Mohamed Salah and this might send Diaz to a sell out. He has shown flashes of brilliance though his overall goal contributions haven’t matched expectations due to recent injuries. So, with the arrival of strong competition from other wingers, he might find himself on the bench more often due to limited playing time.

There is a possibility that there is some interest from Spanish clubs, that fueled his father’s comments  even if the player has not expressed his desire to leave.

On the other hand, he might stay if the incoming manager sees him fit for his playing style, and might also be on the cusp of rediscovering his early form at the club. Despite recent challenges, he remains a skilled winger with the potential to be a major contributor.
